"Former NHL All-Star skates through
adversity to follow in family business with Newnan auto dealership"
By now you all know him as that guy on TV who wants to "Put
a Dodge in Your Garage." But it was shooting pucks, not selling
trucks, where John Cullen first fought to establish himself
as an NHL All-Star.
And though he missed out on winning a
Stanley Cup by two months early in his career as a teammate
of Mario Lemieux with the Pittsburgh Penguins, the 43-year-old
became a champion through his own courageous battle off the
ice before retiring in 1998.
Cullen is three-quarters of the
way into his first year as a dealership owner after a five-year
apprenticeship as a general manager with his older brother
at Terry Cullen Chevrolet in Jonesboro. While Clayton County
is still home for now to his wife Valerie, 12 year-old daughter
Kennedy and twin 7-year-old girls, John sees Newnan as an
area with tremendous potential.
"There are dealerships (for
sale) everywhere," he said. "I wasn't looking for just anyplace.
I really love the people in Coweta county and like the growth
potential of Newnan. It's booming. We're really happy here."
He's not looking to use his career in order to make a living.
If not for a rear hallway wall in the showroom at John Cullen
Dodge decorated by his wife Valerie - Cullen's hockey career,
which included 187 goals and 363 assists in 621 career games
over 10 seasons with four NHL teams, would be non-existent
at the dealership on Hwy. 34 adjacent to the Yamaha recreation
soccer fields.
It doesn't stop him from chuckling every now
and then at the many who have wandered down that hallway and
had to take a second glance.
"When she first put it up there
was a bunch of people who said, 'Wait a minute. That's you?',"
said Cullen. "But you'd be surprised that there are quite
a few down here who know."
Still, very few in Coweta County
know Cullen's entire story.
Cullen's fight to overcome non-Hodgkin's
lymphoma in 1997 as a member of the Tampa Bay Lightning and
ensuing return to the ice the following year, was in many
ways no different than any other cancer survivor's journey
- to his own admission. Too many, like his late mother, who
passed away from melanoma, succumb to the disease despite
their own difficult battle and the support behind them.
"I'm
no hero. No one fights any less. Everybody has to stay positive
through it, fight through it, and you've got to have the support
from your family and friends.

10 centerman would gladly skate into the corner against current

a loose puck if it meant a sale attached on the end of his

It's just my nature.
"Guys like myself, we're not supposed to make it,"
said Cullen, who had 898 career penalty minutes in 621 games.
"I've always been aggressive. If I wasn't playing well, my
brothers would say, 'You're not being aggressive enough. You're
not being a bugger.'"
